Overview of San Bruno

San Bruno is located on the beautiful San Francisco Peninsula, just a few miles south of the city of San Francisco. This small community is extremely close to the San Francisco International Airport, making it a convenient location for travelers.

Those thinking about a move to this area will find there are San Bruno apartments for rent to suit most residents.

Living in San Bruno, CA

The first occupants of the region were the Ohlone Native Americans. These hunter-gatherer people created communities throughout the peninsula. It is estimated that several thousand Ohlone Native Americans lived in the region during its peak population.

San Bruno was named for Captain Bruno Heceta, who explored the Bay Area in 1775. Heceta named the area after himself and his patron saint, Saint Bruno. Spanish explorers continued to scope out the area and create missions at strategic points through the next few years.

The land that makes up San Bruno was given to a Mexican military hero in the 1820s. When Mexico lost the Mexican-American war in 1848, the land was ceded to the United States. Settlers began to come to the region, which served as a stopping point between San Jose and San Francisco. By 1863 a railroad was constructed between the two major cities. San Bruno benefitted from this development, as industry and trade came to the area.

San Bruno continued to develop, and it became an official municipality in 1914. It was still rural through the 1940s, but several events changed the future of the community. During World War II, U.S. military members crossed through San Bruno as they headed to or from military bases in the Pacific Ocean. Many would return to the community to settle down after the war, creating a population boom in the area. San Bruno was also altered by construction when housing developments were constructed on local land. The additional housing and new military members joining the community caused the population to skyrocket.

San Bruno is now an important community on the San Francisco Peninsula. Located right near the airport, it sees thousands of travelers passing through each week. It has changed from a small rural development into a community with more than 41,000 residents.

San Bruno Work and Study

Students who wish to pursue a higher education in San Bruno can choose to study at the local Skyline College. The community college allows residents to earn an associate degree or transfer credits to a four-year school and obtain an undergraduate degree. The school opened in 1969 and has since served thousands of community members.

Because San Francisco is such a short distance from San Bruno, it's easy for students to commute to school in the big city. Those seeking a four-year degree may choose to attend San Francisco State University. Even though the school first opened as a teacher's college, it now serves students who have interests in a variety of subjects.

Some students may feel more at home at the University of San Francisco, an institution devoted to strong academics. With small class sizes, it's easy for pupils to obtain the individual attention they need to stay on track. The school is also dedicated to diversity, and encourages its students to participate in study abroad programs to learn more about other cultures and experience new ways of life.

Those seeking work instead of an education will find that the top employers in San Bruno are Cisco Ironport Systems, YouTube, Target, SNK SB Crossing, Sears and Lowe's Hardware.

Rentals in San Bruno, CA, and Cost of Living

While some may find that living in San Bruno may be more than they are accustomed to, residents will find it possible to cut back on expenses. By using the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, locals may be able to cut their transportation costs and still manage to get around efficiently.

San Bruno Attractions and Special Events

San Bruno encourages residents to get to know one another at community gatherings, and their summer events are a great way to do just that. A weekly Concert in the Park program provides residents with free entertainment, and attendees can listen to different types of music each week. From classic rock to Motown, there will be something for everyone to enjoy at these events.

Because San Bruno is so close to San Francisco, it's easy to escape for a day and enjoy the best of the big city. Sports fans will love the games they can attend here. Residents can catch Giants and Oakland A's baseball, Golden State Warriors basketball or 49ers football. San Bruno residents who want to explore the outdoors with their families can enjoy Golden Gate Park, which provides a scenic, green escape in metropolitan San Francisco.
