Living in Clairemont
Everything is nearby when you live in a Clairemont apartment. Whether you’re heading to the beach, out to the desert, or down to Mission Valley you won’t have far to drive. If you opt to stick closer to your rental, you’ll appreciate Clairemont’s easy-going vibe. Part of that is due to the community’s great climate and the ocean views. This family-friendly part of San Diego is split into a few distinct areas: North Clairemont, South Clairemont, Clairemont Mesa East, and Clairemont Mesa West. In general, it’s a middle-class community with more expensive homes found up in the canyons.
Clairemont was first developed during the housing boom that followed World War II. This is San Diego’s largest post-war subdivision, but it’s not cookie cutter. Instead of the standard city grid, Clairemont was laid out with winding streets that maximized bay views. Several thousand homes were constructed in Clairemont in just a few years. If it feels suburban, that’s because it was one of the country’s first suburbs. Clairemont became a template for this type of near-city community.
Clairemont Lifestyle and Entertainment
Clairemont isn’t overrun with retail, but you won’t struggle to find places to shop or eat, either. Where Clairemont Drive and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard intersect, you’ll see a cinema, restaurants, markets, and more. There’s also good shopping around Balboa and Genesee avenues. In Clairemont there are small restaurants and local businesses as well as national chains. You can hear live music at places such as the Blarney Stone or Peter D’s.
Tecolote Canyon is Clairemont’s largest green space. This large nature park is good for hiking and dog walking. There are other smaller parks in the neighborhood, such as Kearny Mesa Park, where there’s a recreation center and pool.
Clairemont Info and the Rental Market
Clairemont is the type of neighborhood that’s great for families, students, singles, or retirees. A range of property types are available for rent here, including single-family homes, apartments, and duplexes. Some of the older places can look a little run down, though. Rents in North Clairemont are pricier than those on either side of the mesa. In Clairemont Mesa West a two-bedroom rents for an average of $1,815.
There are a few public bus routes that serve Clairemont, but most commuters will be driving themselves. Luckily, nothing is too far away. You’re only about 10 minutes from Mission Valley by car.
