Living Downtown

Claim a Downtown San Diego apartment and you’ll earn yourself a lively lifestyle matched with a kicked-back vibe. Not bad for the center of the U.S.’s eighth largest city! There are eight distinctive parts of Downtown, from the Core-Columbia business district to the up-and-coming East Village. You can grab a great meal in Little Italy, wander historic Cortez Hill, or go dancing in the Gaslamp Quarter—the city is yours to explore from here.

Downtown San Diego came to life starting in the middle of the 19th century. This “New Town” eclipsed the original settlement in Old Town because of its access to shipping. Around the turn of the century, the transcontinental railroad reached San Diego and the city took off. Downtown fell into disrepair in the 1960s, but this was quickly followed by successful redevelopment efforts in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Today, attractions like Horton Plaza, Seaport Village, and Petco Park all help keep Downtown a choice place to call home.

Downtown Lifestyle and Entertainment

The San Diego Opera, the San Diego Symphony, and a number of theater companies all make their home Downtown. When it comes to eating out, you’ll have your choice between upscale eateries and casual dining options covering a wide range of cuisines. There are also nightclubs here, such as the House of Blues and Croce’s, if you want to get your groove on. Catch a Padres game at Petco Park, too, during baseball season.

Shopping is plentiful in Downtown San Diego. Horton Plaza holds over 140 shops and restaurants and that’s just one neighborhood option. For your fresh air fix, check out the Embarcadero Marina Park, Pantoja Park, or a handful of others.
