Everything in between Interstate 8, Interstate 805, the Mount Soledad Freeway, and within the city limits is included in this section of San Diego. You’ll find the neighborhoods of Allied Gardens, Birdland, Del Cerro, Grantville, Kearny Mesa, Lake Murray, Mission Valley East, San Carlos, Serra Mesa, and Tierrasanta here.

Most of Eastern San Diego saw development in the post-war period. That said, this is where you’d go to visit the Mission of San Diego de Alcala. It was moved to Mission Valley East in 1774. More recently, the U.S. military operated bases in Eastern San Diego. Camp Kearny gave Kearny Mesa its name and Camp Elliot served as a training facility for Marines. These bases have closed and given way to homes, shops, and schools.
