Living in Mid-City San Diego
Take your pick from a selection of apartments found arrayed across an appealing variety of Mid-City neighborhoods. This eastern part of San Diego covers communities suitable for many tastes—including, most probably, yours. Mid-City encompasses hip, urban areas such as Kensington, North Park, Normal Heights, and University Heights, as well as sleepier parts of town such as Golden Hill and South Park. How close to the action you end up only depends on your preferences and budget.
Exactly where Mid-City begins and ends isn’t universally agreed upon. It’s more of a catchall term that roughly includes the area bordered by I-8 to the north, down towards National City to the south, Downtown and Balboa Park to the west, and La Mesa to the east. You’ll find both historic neighborhoods and newer additions within Mid-City San Diego.
Mid-City San Diego Lifestyle and Entertainment
If you’re looking for shops and restaurants, try Kensington and Normal Heights, particularly in the area along Adams Avenue. University Heights is also good for getting out, but don’t get confused—there’s no university there! Instead you’ll find coffee shops, boutiques, and artists’ studios.
In Mid-City, eating out means everything from a slice of pizza to a prix fixe meal at Bleu Boheme. There are hipster bars like the Club Kensington and pubs such as the Blind Lady Ale House, too. You can catch an indie film at Ken Cinema or go for a hike in Manzanita or Juniper canyons.
Mid-City San Diego Info and the Rental Market
Mid-City neighborhoods each have their own distinct character. City Heights is ethnically diverse while College Area attracts San Diego State University students. Golden Hill has historic homes but Kensington houses more hipsters. In Mid-City you’ll find everything from condos and apartments to cottages and million-dollar homes. The average rents in these neighborhoods range from $1,000 to $1,500 a month.
If you’re commuting, the San Diego Trolley Green Line stops at SDSU on its way Downtown or out to the eastern suburbs. Buses crosshatch the Mid-City area, as well.
