Living in Mira Mesa

If you’re looking to rent a Mira Mesa apartment, you’ll be in good company. This suburb is one of San Diego’s largest—and fastest growing—communities. Just to the south you’ll find Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. You’ve also got the University of California San Diego, Qualcomm, biotech firms, pharmaceutical companies, and other major employers nearby. This northern part of San Diego is so well provisioned it sometimes feels like its own city. It may still be developing its own distinct personality, but it has a lot of raw material to work with.

Mira Mesa was built up in the 1950s. Before then, it was a test zone for the U.S. Army. When the housing boom hit San Diego, this area became one of the first places to get developed. Homes here were built so rapidly that residents arrived faster than schools, restaurants, or services could keep up. Luckily, there’s been time for the community to equalize since those early days.

Mira Mesa Lifestyle and Entertainment

There isn’t much you can’t get done in Mira Mesa. This is a community well supplied with shopping centers, restaurants, and entertainment options. Mira Mesa’s large Asian-American community brings Indian, Vietnamese, and Filipino markets, restaurants, and shops to the neighborhood. There are large chain stores and cheap eats and even a farmer’s market here.

In Mira Mesa, you’ll find an ice arena, an aquatic complex, a bowling alley, and a cinema. The community is also well provisioned with parks, including Mira Mesa Park where you’ll find the Mira Mesa Gil Johnson Rec Center.

Mira Mesa Info and the Rental Market

Mira Mesa attracts students from UC San Diego and San Diego Miramar College, hi-tech professionals, singles, military personnel, and families. It’s an ethnically diverse community, with near 40% of its residents of Asian heritage. Neighborhood rentals range from single-family homes to apartments in large complexes. A two-bedroom in Mira Mesa rents for an average of $1,543 a month.

If you’re commuting from Mira Mesa, the Coaster commuter train stops in Sorrento Valley near I-5. There are also buses and shuttles operated by San Diego Transit and the Metropolitan Transit System. For those with cars, the traffic on Mira Mesa Boulevard can be bad, but it’s better than it was before the Ted Williams Freeway was completed a few years back.

Mira Mesa Resources

There’s a United States Post Office on Mira Mesa Boulevard. The Mira Mesa Branch of the San Diego Public Library is on New Salem Street. Mira Mesa falls within San Diego City Council District 5.
