Northeastern San Diego apartments and rentals situate north of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and out among the canyons and mesas. Some major companies operate their headquarters in this part of town, including Qualcomm, Chicken of the Sea, and Abgent. That makes Northeastern San Diego an amalgam of industrial and residential areas. Neighborhoods here include Black Mountain Ranch, Carmel Mountain, Miramar, Miramar Ranch North, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Encantada, Rancho Peñasquitos, Sabre Springs, Scripps Ranch, Sorrento Valley, and Torrey Highland.

The northeastern corner of the metro area grew up fairly recently. Most of the developments here sprouted in the second half of the 20^th century. Before then, this area was mostly ranch land or military installations. Some acreage here remains agricultural, such as up in San Pasqual Valley.

On the whole, Northeastern San Diego is a quieter section of the city. You can get your retail fix at shopping centers in Carmel Mountain Ranch, Mira Mesa, and Rancho Bernardo, however. You’ll be able to find neighborhood restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops, and even a movie theater in those communities. It’s mostly suburban-style living, however. Services can be found, but not so trendy stores.

Los Peñasquitos canyon is great for hiking, biking, or horseback riding. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is in San Pasqual Valley. The Miramar reservoir offers a bit of cool comfort. Head there for boating and fishing. Black Mountain Open Space is also excellent for enjoying the outdoors.

Northeastern San Diego rentals range from secluded single-family homes to apartments in sizable developments. All kinds of people choose to live in this part of the city, including high-tech professionals, families, and retirees. Average rents range from lows of $1,438 a month in Mira Mesa to a high of $2,190 in Miramar Ranch North.

Commuting from Northeastern San Diego likely means driving your own car. The Coaster commuter rail has a Sorrento Valley Station, but that may not be close enough to be convenient. Some city buses serve these communities as well.

There are United States Post Offices in Mira Mesa, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Rancho Peñasquitos, and elsewhere. The San Diego Public Library serves Northeastern San Diego with Carmel Mountain, Mira Mesa, Rancho Peñasquitos, and other branches. Northeastern San Diego falls within San Diego City Council Districts 1, 5, and 7. Pomerado Hospital is in Poway, just east of Carmel Mountain Ranch.
