Living in University City

University City rentals come in two distinct flavors. North of Rose Canyon Open Space, which divides the area, you’ll find the newer half of the neighborhood. Sometimes referred to as University Towne Centre or UTC, this section contains high-rises, apartment complexes, shopping centers, and lots of students from the nearby University of California. South of Rose Canyon lies the older half of the neighborhood. Built up in the 1960s, this section contains more single-family homes, an older population, and fewer retail areas.

University City used to feel like a college town. It has, however, blossomed over the years into a major urban node. Times have been so good here that the neighborhood earned the nickname “The Golden Triangle.” It’s an area that seems to draw success. Near here you’ll find UCSD, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and the Torrey Pines science research area. These neighbors have helped transform University City into a high-intensity, mixed-use community.

University City Lifestyle and Entertainment

The San Diego Westfield University Towne Centre is the largest of three shopping centers in University City. There you’ll find a Pottery Barn, an Apple Store, restaurants, and much more. In the southern half of University City, there’s also enough to keep residents engaged. Head to the intersection of Governor and Genesee to find a grocery, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. Nightlife in the neighborhood is mostly limited to bar hopping.

There are a number of parks and recreation centers in University City. Doyle Recreation Center and Park has separate off-leash areas for small and large dogs. Rose Canyon Open Space is the largest swath of green by a wide margin, but there are other large parks around if you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy the outdoors.
