Living in San Dimas, CA

Before American settlers came to this region, it was occupied by other groups of people. Native American tribes camped in the San Dimas area, and Spanish explorers trekked through the region in the late 1700s. The area was originally part of the last Spanish land grant, Rancho San Jose.

San Dimas was formed in 1887 with the construction of the Santa Fe Railroad. People from across the country flocked to California, as trains offered low fares and families sought to expand their opportunities out West. Settlers planted wheat, and later expanded their farms to grow oranges and lemons. Citrus became a popular industry, and the area was home to several citrus-packing operations.

However, San Dimas would not remain an agricultural community for very long. In 1954, the San Bernardino Freeway was completed, ending the quiet, secluded life residents had known. With increased transportation throughout the area, more people made the move to San Dimas, and the town experienced significant growth, getting officially incorporated in 1960.

San Dimas has come a long way from its past as a small rural community. Today it is home to more than 33,000 residents, and those who live in San Dimas embrace the city's appreciation of its historic past.
