Overview of San Jacinto

Located in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains in Riverside County, the city of San Jacinto is one of southern California's oldest and most eclectic communities. Many residents in the area are seeking out San Jacinto apartments for rent because of the successful, entrepreneurial spirit of the community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city is home to more than 45,000 people and is exhibiting plenty of growth due to all of the amenities that the city has to offer.

Living in San Jacinto, CA

The first Spanish explorers came into the San Jacinto Valley just before the American Revolution. Soon afterwards, the Mission San Luis Rey established cattle ranches and a small community began to grow. Once Mexico took over the valley, private individuals sought out land grants and began to construct some the the most historically significant buildings in the area.

San Jacinto was officially founded in 1870, and incorporated in 1888 after California was granted statehood. By this time, the local economy had shifted from cattle ranching to growing grain, apricots, walnuts and citrus fruits. Before World War I, the community was largely a farming area, yet the beauty of the area soon made the valley a hot spot for tourism.

When the natural hot springs in the north side of the valley were discovered, the Los Angeles elite began building tourist resorts and bath houses so that they could take in the so-called healing waters. Today, the community has a growing business community that takes pride on its storied past, but looks forward to a bright future.

San Jacinto Work and Study

Although San Jacinto still has a solid base in agriculture, there is a growing diverse business base that includes both manufacturing and non-manufacturing jobs. According to the city's website, the largest private employers include Steel Weld, Skyline Corporation and Agri-Empire. Several manufacturing products that are made in the area include electronic components, mobile homes and assembly parts production. Finding San Jacinto rentals near Interstate 10 might be your best bet for having easy access to and from work if you are commuting.

Many residents from all walks of life go to nearby Mt. San Jacinto College, a two-year institution that prides itself on being active in the community. Students here can receive degrees and certifications in everything from music to water technology. A popular public university nearby is the University of California-Riverside. One of the most ethnically diverse research facilities on the West Coast, this campus enrolls more than 20,000 students every year.

Rentals in San Jacinto, CA and Cost of Living

Like many communities in southern California, the cost of living in San Jacinto is higher than the national average. According to, the median gross rent in

2009 was $947 per month. However, due to the business growth in the area, the median household income rose over $12,000 per year from 2000 to 2009, making the area a very affordable place to live.

San Jacinto Attractions and Special Events

One of the attractions that many San Jacinto residents take pride in is the Estudillo Heritage Park Water Conservation Garden. This water-wise garden features plants that are native to southern California, but also showcases horticulture from the Mediterranean, Mexico, South America and Australia.
