Overview of San Pablo

With a small town atmosphere just minutes away from the cultural hub of the Bay Area, it is no surprise that many Californians are interested in San Pablo apartments for rent. One of the oldest Spanish settlements in northern California, the city has become one of the most thriving business and residential communities in West Contra Costa County. According to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has seen a recent spike in population growth with around 30,000 residents.

Living in San Pablo, CA

The history of San Pablo stretches as far back as the early 1800s when 20,000 acres of Spanish lands were granted to the Castro family. Influential to many Californians, the Castro family produced the first native-born governor of California, Juan Bautista Alvarado. In the mid-19th century, the Gold Rush and the eventual U.S. statehood of the Golden State brought many quick changes to the area. One a stage coach reached the city limits, the Castro family began selling their land to European immigrants who soon became ranchers and farmers, and San Pablo became an ideal agricultural community.

Although the city remained a small community for years, World War II changed the country and San Pablo was no different. After the war, the population saw an exponential growth in residents when many veterans returning from war seized on the GI Bill to build homes near the new Richmond Shipyard. As the years went on, San Pablo began to identify itself as a post-war suburban community with many public works projects and affordable housing.

San Pablo Work and Study

The biggest industry in the area is in healthcare, according to the city's website. Of the top ten employers in San Pablo, five of them are hospitals or other healthcare-related centers. However, the largest employer in the area is Contra Costa College. Even during a difficult economic climate, San Pablo attracts many new sources of retail and restaurants because of its ideal location and superior quality of life. Whether you are traveling outside of the city or working in town, finding San Pablo rentals near Interstate 80 is your safest bet for an ideal commute.

The largest and most populated university in the area is Contra Costa College. Part of the community since 1948, this institution has been providing education for San Pablo residents for more than 60 years. Complete with many degree and certificate programs in a wide variety of study, there are plenty of ways to advance your career at this institution.
