Living in Sausalito

This community of just over 7,000 residents became known as Sausalito in 1868 when it was settled by Mexican, Chilean and Panamanian bandits who survived the Bandit Wars of the 1860s. Throughout its history, the town has been an integral part of Bay Area development. In less than 150 years, the town saw many changes. It went from simply a source of water for ships to a fishing community of Portuguese settlers. Later, it became the home of round-the-clock shipyards during World War II and finally, a city of charming neighborhoods. It is now primarily a tourist attraction and is visited by about 1 million people annually. It’s world-renowned for its shopping, art galleries and the quality of its restaurants, bistros and outdoor cafes. At least thirty fine restaurants are within walking distance from the community’s center. There are also fabulous views of San Francisco across the bay.

Families and singles who rent an apartment in Sausalito will enjoy the outdoor activities. Apartment renters will find that recreation opportunities include biking, camping, hiking, sailing, fishing and camping. You can also take sailing, paddle boarding and kayaking lessons. The city offers over a dozen neighborhood parks, 2 public beaches, 1 fishing pier, and a boat launching ramp.

Apartment renters have access to great shopping, a variety of dining experiences including fine dining, bistros, diners, delis and fast food. Local wineries also tempt the palate with wine tastings. Singles can enjoy the active night life that has restaurants and clubs with live music of every kind and concerts. There are stage presentations at the Opera House and festivals such as the Annual Arts Festival.

No matter where you go you will find fun things to do in the neighborhood. Museums and tours are available at Bay Area Discovery Museum, Marine Mammal Center, Call of the Sea, Sausalito Wooden Boat Tour and Portuguese Heritage Walking Tour. The town is bounded by part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area giving residents easy access to that natural area.

The majority of people living in Sausalito drive in order to get around, but there are public transportation options. Ferry-based transportation with the Blue and Gold Fleet travels between the town and San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, and the Golden Gate Ferry service travels between the town and the Ferry Building in San Francisco.
