Overview of Tarzana

Situated in the rolling hillsides of Los Angeles County, Tarzana embodies the best of Southern California living. Primarily a residential community, the city boasts beautiful scenery and safe streets that are inviting for people of all ages. Nearly 35,000 people call Tarzana home, keeping the community smaller than most other suburbs in the area. Many families choose to leave the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles for a more serene environment, making apartments near Tarzana extremely popular.

Living in Tarzana, CA

Spanish settlers and missionaries first occupied the San Fernando Mission in 1797. The land had a short stint under Mexican rule before being ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. Under United States rule, the area was home to large cattle ranches which were later taken over by investors and large wheat farms. In 1909, the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company purchased most of the land and started building housing developments.

The town received its name in the late 1920s, when local residents voted to honor the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of the Tarzan stories, who lived in town. Harrison Gray Otis, publisher of the Los Angeles Times, also purchased land in the area, and his investments helped Tarzana develop into the affluent town it is today.

Tarzana Work and Study

Located in the outskirts of the metropolis of Los Angeles, Tarzana residents can take advantage of many educational opportunities. California State University at Northridge and Pepperdine University are also close by for students who wish to avoid the chaos of the big city.

Those looking for work will find a wealth of opportunities in the Los Angeles area, where the economy is driven by entertainment, aerospace, trade, technology, fashion and petroleum. Many large companies are headquartered downtown, including Twentieth Century Fox, Univision, Guess, Paramount Pictures, 21st Century Insurance, CB Richard Ellis and countless others, all employing hundreds of residents in the greater Los Angeles area. The city also has many blue collar opportunities in the service industry to help serve the millions of tourists who visit the area each year looking for great food, entertainment and celebrity sightings.
