Spanish settlers and missionaries first occupied the San Fernando Mission in 1797. The land had a short stint under Mexican rule before being ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. In 1909, the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company purchased most of the land and started building housing developments.

The town received its name in the late 1920s, when local residents voted to honor the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs, the author of the Tarzan stories, who lived in town. Harrison Gray Otis, publisher of the Los Angeles Times, also purchased land in the area, and his investments helped Tarzana develop into the affluent town it is today.

Located in the outskirts of the metropolis of Los Angeles, Tarzana residents can take advantage of many educational opportunities. The University of Southern California and University of California, Los Angeles, are the two most prestigious schools in the area, but they’re joined by Santa Monica College, Los Angeles Valley College and others within the city limits.
