Overview of Toluca Lake

Located between the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles and Burbank, the city of Toluca Lake remains a one of the most luxurious areas of the Greater Los Angeles area. Home to great schools, many area colleges and universities and the Los Angeles Zoo, it makes sense that so many Los Angeles residents are finding homes in fantastic Toluca Lake apartments for rent. The estimated population is around 17,500, the perfect size for a warm, welcoming community in the heart of a large city.

Living in Toluca Lake, CA

Similar to many other neighborhoods in Los Angeles, the area around Toluca Lake was once part of a Spanish land grant for centuries. California began to receive national notoriety after the California Gold Rush, and thousands of pioneers began to gather on the west coast in hopes of striking it rich. During this time, much of Toluca Lake was largely agricultural.

In the early 1900s, a housing developer named Burton E. Green began to look north of the Los Angeles city limits and saw great potential for residential development. Since the area was growing at an exponential rate due to the expansion of the motion pictures, (known as "talkies" back then) what was then known as Hollywoodland began to sprout a booming industry. Although Toluca Lake had a few homes sprinkled in the lands of North Hollywood, in the 1920s the area was still home to many peach groves and apple orchards.

It wasn't until the mid-20th century that many celebrities began to move into the area. Today, many residents move to the town to be close to the amenities and job opportunities in LA while still being close to nature and a thriving, small community.

Toluca Lake Work and Study

Since the fashion, media, design and culinary industries all come to a crossroads in the Toluca Lake area, it is no surprise that many of the secondary institutions here focus on the arts. One of the most popular includes the The Art Institute of California. Located in the NoHo Arts District in the San Fernanado Valley, students here can learn about the art industries while having the opportunity to network with potential employers. One of the more traditional institutions in the community is Woodbury University. Known for its focus on technology and innovation, many students make their home here to secure the jobs of tomorrow.

It is no surprise that the movie industry is the bread and butter of many communities in the Los Angeles area, and Toluca Lake is no exception. According to the Burbank Chamber of Commerce, the largest employers in the area include The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. and NBC/Universal. Whether you are working near the city or commuting to the downtown Los Angeles area, finding Toluca Lake apartments near Interstate 5 is your best bet for avoiding headaches from the infamous traffic of Los Angeles.

Rentals in Toluca Lake, CA and Cost of Living

According to information from city-data.com, the 2009 median rent in the area was $948, a very affordable option for many Los Angeles residents. The median household income here is also higher than the average California resident by $2,000 per year, so potential citizens here can expect a wide range of rentals and lifestyles available to them in Toluca Lake.

Toluca Lake Attractions and Special Events

One of the most beloved attractions in the area is the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens. Since Toluca Lake has a temperate climate, many of these animals are available for children and adults to view year round. Home to 1,100 mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, this zoo is a great place for many residents who want to escape the "concrete jungle" atmosphere of LA and relax in the green space of Toluca Lake.
