Located at the northeastern edge of the Bay Area in Solano County, Vallejo is in one of the fastest growing communities in Northern California. Vallejo is well connected to the region and is within an easy commute to major centers of employment such as San Francisco and Walnut Creek.
Vallejo grew into an important shipping and naval center during the 1850s, and Vallejo's Mare Island Shipyard was the first shipyard on the West Coast. Vallejo's top employers include Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Vallejo Unified School District, Kaiser Permanente Call Center and Sutter Health Medical Center.
Vallejo is served by the Vallejo Unified School District, which offers K-12 education to approximately 15,500 students. The scenic campus of the California Maritime Academy is located just minutes away from Vallejo rentals, and prepares students for careers in the fields of business, marine engineering, global studies and maritime affairs, marine transportation and mechanical engineering. Solano Community College was part of the Vallejo Unified School District until it became a countywide institution. It now serves 11,000 students offering academic study and occupational training, and includes a Vallejo campus in addition to campuses in Fairfield, Vacaville and the Travis Air Force Base. Touro University California is located on Mare Island, and was chartered in 1970 to enrich the Jewish heritage and serve the American community. It offers graduate degrees in osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant studies and public health and education.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is one of the most popular amusement parks in Northern California. It combines wildlife shows and interactive animal exhibits with thrilling roller coasters and family rides.
The Vallejo Naval & Historical museum includes two floors of exhibits and information about Vallejo and Mare Island, and includes a working World War II periscope. The Mare Island Museum contains numerous artifacts chronicling the history of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard and ship manufacturing from the Civil War through the Cold War.
