As a district of the San Fernando Valley, Van Nuys is located within Los Angeles. The district was named after Isaac Van Nuys, the Dutch founder of the San Fernando Homestead Association in 1869. The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, which manages more than 60 public housing locations throughout Los Angeles, is committed to providing affordable housing options to residents in all neighborhoods. More than 6,500 low-income families in LA receive assistance from the Public Housing Program. Van Nuys includes some of the earliest residential developments in the Valley. The district features Spanish Colonial Revival and English Revival architecture styles from the 1920s alongside California Ranch-style homes built in the 1950s. According to city-data.com, the median rent in 2009 for Van Nuys apartments was $736.

The Japanese Garden in Van Nuys spans more than six acres and is a popular location for movie production and weddings. The authentic garden was constructed to resemble "stroll gardens," which were created during the 18th and 19th centuries for Japanese Feudal lords. The garden incorporates the classical designs of a dry garden, a wet garden and an authentic tea ceremony garden.

The Leo Magnus Cricket Complex in Van Nuys, also known as the Woodley Cricket Field, is the home field for 20 teams. It captures the ambiance of popular cricket clubs in Europe and Australia, and features a small stand that seats upto 50 spectators. Batsmen can play their full range of shots on four natural turf pitches with spacious outfields.
