Overview of Five Points

Rent an apartment in the Five Points neighborhood of Denver, CO, for life in one the city’s most historic neighborhoods. Block after block of gorgeous historic Victorian homes blend with luxury loft rentals and other new housing options. The mix of historic and new development makes for a vibrant community, which also is reflected in the diversity of its residents. Located about a mile northeast of downtown, the district earned its name because it is where four major streets meet.

Five Points was Denver’s first suburb and home to the city’s wealthiest residents beginning in the 1860s. Around the 1920s, Five Points shifted to a mainly African-American community, known as “Harlem of the West.” The many night spots and clubs in the neighborhood hosted jazz greats of the day, like Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and more. After a period of decline beginning mid-century, the area has undergone a resurgence in recent years and is now seen as “gentrifying.” Five Points is close to other popular Denver communities, like Northeast and Northwest.

Five Points Lifestyle and Entertainment

Five Points is most popular with young professionals from 25 to 44; many single and most without children. The area boasts a busy retail corridor with a wide selection of restaurants. Locals flock to the neighborhood to enjoy some of the city’s best Caribbean, soul and BBQ food at locally owned and operated eateries. Plus, more than 75 local businesses line the community’s main retail avenue, Welton Street.

The community celebrates its rich musical history by hosting the Five Points Jazz Festival every May. The free event features more than 100 performers, family activities and great food. Other neighborhood attractions include the Stiles African American Heritage Center, the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library and the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center.

The area is dotted with several local parks, including Lawson Park, Fuller Park, Curtis Park and Schafer Park, among them. Nearby is Denver’s City Park, a 330-acre outdoor space that offers the Denver Zoo, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and two lakes. The City Park Golf Course, a public course is adjacent to the park.

The Five Points Rental Market

The Five Points rental market offers an exciting mix of options from restored Victorian homes, to loft living, apartments and single-family homes. The cost of living in this Denver neighborhood is about 11 percent above the national average. Rental costs reflect the changing nature of the community. Studio and one-bedroom apartments begin at just under $1,000 monthly with two bedrooms being offered for about $1,500. Five Points is conveniently connected to downtown and other areas of the city by the RTD’s light rail line. Typically, residents have a commute time of about 20 minutes.
