Living in Greenwood Village, CO

The area now known as Greenwood Village was once rich with farms, gravel roads and dairies just fifty years ago. By the early 1900s, Greenwood Village was thriving with cherry, apple, apricot, plum and pear orchards. Colorado pioneer Rufus Clark bought 160 acres of land by the Platte River, which eventually turned into 20,000 acres, including much of Greenwood Village. Clark raised potatoes and over time acquired Clark Colony, east of Holly Street. At the same time, another immigrant was operating the Greenwood Ranch, which had eight reservoirs and spanned the area between Steele Street and Stanford Avenue.

During the 1930s and ‘40s, the area was home to farmers and was a destination for residents of Denver that would come to the area for the summer. In the 1950s, residents of Greenwood Village began to worry that development of the southern portion of Denver would creep into the laid-back, farming lifestyles of current residents. A group of residents voiced their concerns and proposed a new town called Greenwood Village after the historic ranch. The election was held on September 8, 1950, and the incorporation passed 74-64.
