Living in Lafayette, CO
The first inhabitants of the land were the Ute, Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes who lived nomadic lives on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Gold prospectors arrived from the East during the California Gold Rush and settled in small homesteads for dirt farming, trapping and hunting. These residents did not create a community, and instead lived under the understanding that it was every man for himself. The Homestead Act led to fast population growth as the prospect of coal mining opportunities began to grow. After the first shaft was sunk into Mary Miller’s farm in 1884, she bought 150 acres of land and built a town named after her late husband Lafayette.
Lafayette thrived as a mining community through the mid 20th century until natural gas replaced coal as the main source for fuel. Rapid growth in Boulder and Denver sent residents sprawling into the surrounding area. Today, commercial enterprises and small industrial and manufacturing firms are the main contributor to the local economy. Lafayette is a great place to raise a family in the suburban environment of Colorado.
