Littleton, CO
Overview of Littleton
Nestled in a tranquil valley with stunning views of the Rocky Mountains, Littleton is one of the largest suburbs of the Denver metropolitan area. With nearly 18,000 households living in 19,500 housing units, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Littleton has always been a city of families.
With a high level of education (nearly half of the city has either a bachelor's degree or higher), it makes sense that they have such a high median household income of almost $80,000 per year. With beautiful scenery and an educated workforce, it is no wonder that Colorado residents are looking at Littleton apartments for rent.
Living in Littleton, CO
Like so many cities near the Rockies, Littleton had its beginnings in the Pikes Peak gold rush of 1859. Gold-seekers, merchants and farmers flocked to the Denver area at this time in search of wealth and prosperity. Once Denver began to grow into a western metropolis, the family of Richard Sullivan Little fell in love with the dry climate of the small valley south of the city and they began to settle there.
In 1867, the Littles bought the Rough and Ready Flour Mill, and an economic base of the community was built. When the railroad reached the area in 1871, the community started to take shape, and in 1890 the town was incorporated and named after the family that founded it. In 1902, Littleton gained the permanent county seat, bringing in a central government and businesses.
After World War II, Littleton began moving toward the electronics and pneumatics industries, and eventually became known for its strides in munitions and aerospace. During the city's centennial year, many families had made their home in Littleton and by 2010 their population had grown to nearly 42,000, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Littleton Work and Study
Many students in the Littleton area get their education at Arapahoe Community College that guarantees two-year degrees in more than 100 programs with a convenient location. However, because Littleton is a short drive to the Denver area, many students opt for less-expensive Littleton rentals and commute to the city for their education.
Littleton is driven by innovation, so not surprisingly, one of the biggest employers in the city is Lockheed Martin, an aeronautical and weapons manufacturer. Electronics manufacturers like Sypris Solutions also make their home in the Littleton neighborhood.
