Avon was first put on the map in 1645 when several families settled along the peaceful Tunxis Valley. The land that would eventually become Avon was originally christened "Northington," because of its location due north of the Farmington region. By 1830, Northington's population had reached more than 1,000, spurring it to incorporate Avon as a separate town.
Today, Avon's many parks and amenities offer ideal spots for recreation and exercise. Alsop Meadows consists of about 46 acres of open meadow and wooded space along the Farmington River. Countryside Park offers more than 13 acres of picnicking, fishing, skating and swimming facilities, and the Sycamore Hills Recreation Area is home to 33 acres of space for soccer, basketball and tennis courts. The real shining star of Avon's park district, however, is the 233-acre Fisher Meadows. Featuring four soccer fields, four softball fields and hundreds of undeveloped open space for fishing, boating, cross-country skiing and more, this park offers something for every member of the family.
Avon Attractions and Special Events
Avon offers many special attractions, and many of them are dedicated to artistic and scientific discovery. The Talcott Mountain Science Center offers night observing, Connecticut geographical discussions and a variety of other events.
