Living in Enfield
Originally settled by the Pocomtuc people, the area was inhabited by European colonists beginning in 1679. It was incorporated four years later. The town was the site for Jonathan Edwards' famous "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" sermon that was instrumental in the mid-18th century's Great Awakening. A stone marker commemorates the location of the sermon. The town's setting on the Connecticut River also made it a center of water-powered manufacturing in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Located in north-central Connecticut along the border with Massachusetts, the city has a diverse population of around 44,600 residents. The community features several distinct neighborhoods, including a nationally registered Historic District as well as the lakeside Shaker Pines, the Thompsonville town center and Powder Hollow, which was once home to a colonial and Civil War-era gunpowder factory.
In addition to architectural styles that range from Victorian to modern designs on sidewalk-lined cul-de-sacs, these neighborhoods feature several parks and urban green spaces with playgrounds, ball fields and picnic facilities. Scantic River State Park is great for hiking, fishing, kayaking and other nature activities.
The quality of life is also enhanced by the town's close proximity to the professional concerts, theater, opera, ballet and sporting events available in the surrounding area. Most residents travel by car, and Interstate 91 connects drivers to popular amenities.
