Overview of Glastonbury
With a beautiful location just seven miles southeast of Hartford, the community of Glastonbury is one of Connecticut's finest. Although this city may be the third-largest in the Constitution State, the town maintains a quaint atmosphere with a population of more than 33,000, according to Glastonbury's website. Centrally located and close to everything a big city has to offer, it is no surprise that this city has witnessed a 4.6 percent jump in population from 2000 to 2010, according to City-Data. A young city, the average age is younger than 40 for both men and women, making it the perfect community for new families.
Living in Glastonbury, CT
This charming New England town dates back to 1636, when 30 families settled in Naubac Farms, a parcel of land near the Connecticut River that would one day be named after Glastonbury, England. During the 18th and 19th centuries the town became known for its shipbuilding skills, and launched more than 270 ships for the West Indies Trade and coastal rivers of North America, building the city's economy.
During the World Wars, Glastonbury was instrumental for making leather and woolen goods for troops and also developed into an agricultural town. Today, the city of Glastonbury has developed a reputation for adapting and growing, which has been the key to its success. With its high quality of life, low crime and small-town atmosphere, the residents here honor the men and women who built Glastonbury, but are still excited about their prospects for the future.
Glastonbury Attractions and Special Events
Every fall the Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce hosts a community event called the Apple Harvest Festival. A mainstay in the town for nearly 40 years, this annual extravaganza hosts more than 150 craft booths, a pie-eating contest, amusement rides, live entertainment and even a pie bake-off for the culinary masters in the area. This family-oriented festival is a great way to connect with the city and business leaders who support it.
