The town of Manchester began its history as part of Hartford. Originally known to the Europeans as Five Mile Tract, the area was settled in 1673. Over the next decades, Manchester came to be known as Orford Parish and was part of East Hartford.

In the early 1800s residents of Orford Parish began to speak of creating their own town and in 1823 the town of Manchester was incorporated. Like many Connecticut towns, Manchester was heavily involved in the Industrial Revolution, as the area became famous for its silk fabrics and threads. In addition, the town's Cheney Brothers company created new silk processing techniques. The Great Depression hit the town hard but a construction boom in the decades following the Second World War helped to revitalize the area.

The next largest employer is Manchester Memorial Hospital, which employs 1,550 people. Other companies with a substantial presence in the town are GE Aviation, retailer J.C. In addition, the University of Hartford and Trinity College are close by.

Sports enthusiasts will find that Manchester has much to offer. The town is just a 10 minute drive from Rentschler Field, the home of UConn's football team. People looking for quieter activities will have plenty to do as well, as there are more than 1,000 acres of parkland in the town.
