Living in Meriden, CT
Prior to European colonization, Native American tribes Quinnipiac and Mattabasset frequented what is now the Meriden area. It wasn't until 1661 that Jonathan Gilbert obtained the first land deed in the area and set up his farm on Meriden land. The area continued to grow as an agricultural region throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and by 1724 there were about 35 families residing in the region. Meriden was incorporated as a city in 1867. The 19th century brought manufacturing to the area: lamps, ivory combs, coffee grinders, silver products, guns, cutlery and other items were manufactured in Meriden. Growth continued up through the 20th century, shaping Meriden the way residents know it today.
Meriden has a lot going for it. Its state-approved Enterprise Zone houses a variety of companies and offers employment opportunities for residents. A growing number of biotech companies have also moved into the region. Meriden is a major regional retail center, and its recently revamped downtown area and shopping mall house a combined 1 million square feet of retail space.
