In 1639, early settlers from the New Haven colony purchased the land then known as Wepawaug from the Paugusset Tribe. During the Revolutionary War, Milford was a vital route connecting Boston and New York on the Boston Post Road. Continental forces constructed Fort Trumbull to protect the town, and the site of the blockade is still commemorated with the Liberty Rock monument. After the war, Milford became known for shipbuilding, farming, oystering and industrial initiatives. The town was a stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War.

The population of Milford swelled in the 20th century when GIs returning from war bought homes here. Development reached a peak with the completion of Interstate 95 in 1960, allowing easier access in and out of the city.  Today, legend still has it that there is buried treasure a mile off Silver Sands Beach on the island of Poquahaug. Captain Kidd and other pirates allegedly hid “iron chests filled with 'loot'” along the Connecticut Coast, but they have never been discovered.

Although there are no colleges in Milford, there are a number of opportunities located within 20 miles of the city. Yale University is one of the most prestigious schools in the country and is just 10 miles away in New Haven. Other local universities include Albertus Magnus College, the University of New Haven, Southern Connecticut State University, Fairfield University, Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University, the University of Bridgeport, Gateway Community College and Housatonic Community College.

For those seeking work, Milford has a very strong Chamber of Commerce network. The organization includes over 800 businesses who aim to enhance local opportunities and promote positive economic growth in the community. Many people in Milford own their own franchises and small businesses to feed the needs of visitors and local residents. Yale University is also one of the largest employers in the area, as half of New Haven’s economy is now fueled by services, education and healthcare for students.
