Hailed as “A Small City with a Big Heart,” Milford has 17 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. This quaint seaside town is fueled by local charm and proud heritage, with old-timey streets and an exceptionally maintained historical area. Milford’s 51,000 residents have a feeling of local pride in the town’s ability to respect the past while looking to the future. They enjoy modern cultural, recreational and business opportunities mixed with an unparalleled quality of life and strong sense of community. Look for Milford apartments for rent, and find one of the best small towns in New England.
In 1639, early settlers from the New Haven colony purchased the land then known as Wepawaug from the Paugusset Tribe. During the Revolutionary War, Milford was a vital route connecting Boston and New York on the Boston Post Road. Continental forces constructed Fort Trumbull to protect the town, and the site of the blockade is still commemorated with the Liberty Rock monument. After the war, Milford became known for shipbuilding, farming, oystering and industrial initiatives. The town was a stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War.
The population of Milford swelled in the 20th century when GIs returning from war bought homes here. Development reached a peak with the completion of Interstate 95 in 1960, allowing easier access in and out of the city. Today, legend still has it that there is buried treasure a mile off Silver Sands Beach on the island of Poquahaug. Captain Kidd and other pirates allegedly hid “iron chests filled with 'loot'” along the Connecticut Coast, but they have never been discovered.
Although there are no colleges in Milford, there are a number of opportunities located within 20 miles of the city. Yale University is one of the most prestigious schools in the country and is just 10 miles away in New Haven. Other local universities include Albertus Magnus College, the University of New Haven, Southern Connecticut State University, Fairfield University, Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University, the University of Bridgeport, Gateway Community College and Housatonic Community College.
For those seeking work, Milford has a very strong Chamber of Commerce network. The organization includes over 800 businesses who aim to enhance local opportunities and promote positive economic growth in the community. Many people in Milford own their own franchises and small businesses to feed the needs of visitors and local residents. Yale University is also one of the largest employers in the area, as half of New Haven’s economy is now fueled by services, education and healthcare for students. Milford residents commute to New Haven to work for the university as well as in the booming professional, financial and retail trade sectors located here.
With the serenity of life in a waterfront town and the vibrant intellectual environment of nearby New Haven, living in Milford can be pretty expensive. According to U.S. Census Bureau statistics, the standard apartment here costs $1,356 a month. That’s $360 more than the Connecticut state average. Milford also received a cost of living index of 133, which is significantly more than the index of 100 found in the average American city. Despite high prices, new residents move into Milford apartments to experience one of the best living environments in Connecticut.
Milford is home to a broad range of events showcasing the best of local culture. The Walnut Beach Arts Festival takes place "where the sand meets the sky," and celebrates original artists across all design mediums from Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut and more. The Milford Oyster Festival is one of the city's most established traditions featuring the tastes of locally-grown oysters. In addition to delicious food, visitors can enjoy a classic car show, arts and crafts activities, live music and children's entertainment. Other popular events include the Irish Heritage Society of Milford Annual Festival and United Way Annual Golf Classic.
