When people think of Connecticut they likely picture small towns with covered bridges. And while this may be an accurate depiction of many places in the state, these towns also have access to large cities that offer a wide range of employment and entertainment options. Just ask Rocky Hill.
People looking for Rocky Hill apartments for rent will find themselves looking in a town of slightly less than 20,000 people nestled between Hartford - the state capital - and Middletown, a city of about 50,000. Rocky Hill truly does give people a small-town feel while being a short drive from some of the state's larger cities.
Living in Rocky Hill, CT
Rocky Hill was first settled around the middle of the 17th century. Around 1700 flooding altered the nature of the river and Rocky Hill became the head of navigation for larger ships, giving it a central role in trade and in the Revolution.
The area - which officially became a town in 1843 - is named after a ridge in the northeastern portion of the town, which is now a park. During the Industrial Revolution, Rocky Hill was the site of several foundries that made cast iron products. However, in 1983 the Connecticut Foundry Co. went out of business.
While the Connecticut River might not be the commerce center it once was, it still provides town residents with beautiful views and recreation opportunities. People seeking scenic Rocky Hill apartments may want to look near the river and the several parks along the water.
Rocky Hill Work and Study
A variety of industries operate in Rocky Hill, employing many of the town's residents. The largest employer is SYSCO Food Services, which operates a warehouse in the town and has 480 employees.
The town itself is the second largest employer with a payroll of 446. Other large employers include the Henkel Corporation, which produces sealants and adhesives, and ISGN, a loan servicing company. In addition, Hartford's world-renowned insurance industry is close by.
While there aren't really any higher education opportunities in Rocky Hill itself, there are a number of major colleges and universities in the surrounding area. Middletown, located less than 10 miles to the south, is home to top-tier liberal arts college Wesleyan University. Hartford, to the north, is home to Trinity College and the University of Hartford. In addition, the University of Connecticut's main campus in Storrs is less than an hour drive away.
