The town of Vernon is located in the north central area of the state of Connecticut, roughly 15 miles east of Connecticut's capital city of Hartford and 25 miles southeast of the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. Early settlers came to the area in 1716, but the town of Vernon was not incorporated until 1808 when the area was separated from the town of Bolton. Several mills were constructed along the Tankerhoosen and Hockanum rivers, using the water current to help power the mills.
The industrialization of the area is what really spurred the growth and urbanization of Rockville, while the remainder of Vernon was reserved mainly for agricultural and rural purposes. Rockville was incorporated itself in 1889, and by 1900 Vernon's population had grown to 8,483 people, with 7,076 of those people living in the city of Rockville. In 1965, Vernon was combined with Rockville were combined.
