Living in West Hartford
Native Americans lived here for centuries and called the area "suckiaug." In the early 1600s, Dutch settlers established a fur trading business, which later became known as Fort Huys de Goede Hoop. A group of people from the Massachusetts Bay Colony arrived and founded the community. Agriculture sustained West Hartford residents through the early 1900s. Shortly thereafter, affluent Hartford residents began leaving the city for the more appealing rural, country life.
