Overview of Washington

The White House

Perhaps one of the biggest attractions and most notable buildings in D.C. is the White House, and when you're renting in this area, you'll have several opportunities to tour the building. The original location for the White House was selected by George Washington in 1791, but the structure itself wasn't completed until the 19th century. Since its creation, it has undergone several renovations, including an extensive one in 1902 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Today, there are 132 rooms, 32 bathrooms and six levels situated throughout the White House.

You can arrange a public tour with the White House and explore some of its many rooms on a self-guided tour, but it's encouraged to submit your request for a tour in advance - time slots fill up quickly.

The Capitol

Another well-known site that you may want to visit while renting in D.C. is The Capitol. This is where Congress meets, and it continues to be one of the most iconic buildings in all of D.C. Visitors can schedule tours of the Capitol through submitting a request through the Advance Reservation System. However, general admission tickets to the visitor center are free. 

The visitor center of the U.S. Capitol is approximately 580,000 square feet, and it's the newest edition to the building. The Captiol itself was originally constructed in the late 18th century and wasn't finished until the 1800s. Today, it continues to be one of the most recognizable landmarks in D.C.

Government buildings

Depending on where you work and what industry you're in, D.C. can be perfect for your needs. There are several government buildings located around Capitol Hill that make it easy to access some of the many resources scattered throughout the area. While these locations often serve as tourist attractions, they're also convenient for people who happen to work in government and live nearby.
