Apopka, FL
Overview of Apopka
With a population of approximately 42,000 residents, Apopka, FL retains its small-town charm, but has easy access to a big city. Downtown Orlando is just 20 minutes south of Apopka, and although many Apopka residents do business there, they prefer to return to the quaint town each night by finding Apopka apartments to rent.
Living in Apopka, FL
The word Apopka is a Seminole term meaning “potato eating people.” In the 1850s, early settlers arrived in Apopka, but the area was not very populated until the early 1900s when the invention of the automobile made it easier for people to travel south.
In 1971, Walt Disney World Opening Day gave Apopka new life by creating jobs, which prompted new roads and subdivisions. Now, Apopka is the second largest city in Orange County and serves as a bedroom community for people who commute to Orlando.
Apopka Attractions and Special Events
Apopka’s biggest draw for its residents is its proximity to Orlando, but the quiet, historic town has plenty else to offer. One of Apopka’s historic landmarks includes “The Lodge,” one of the oldest Masonic lodge in Florida, which has been in continuous operation since 1859. People can also experience hundreds of tropical foliage plants at the area's many nurseries. Apopka has earned itself the nickname “The Indoor Foliage Capital of the World,” because of dozens of greenhouses that produce all types of plant species and arrangements, from historic fern baskets to the latest orchid hybrids.
Kings Landing, on the Wekiva River, is also a great draw for residents and tourists. It has been rated the No. 1 paddle run in central Florida.
