Bartow was founded by American Revolutionary War officer and North Carolina merchant Reading Blount and his family in 1851. The Blounts originally referred to the to the town as Fort Blount; however, after the conclusion of the Civil War, the Polk County commissioners chose to name the town after General Francis S. Bartow, the first Confederate to die in the war. The Confederate markers throughout the city's Historic Oak Hill Cemetery highlight some of Bartow's events of the past, along with many of the old homes built during the 19th and 20th centuries. In current times, Bartow is the county seat of one of the state's largest counties in size, where thousands of private businesses and local government officials work each day. The majority of the town's economy is brought in through phosphate, citrus and cattle production.

On the third Friday of each month, the town's main street is shut down so residents can gather for a night of food, music and good times. In addition to these local events, residents are just a 40 minute drive east of Tampa Bay and 50 miles southwest of Orlando.
