Overview of Brandon

Living in Brandon, FL
In 1857 settlers began to move to the area east of Tampa. The Brandon family, prominent in community affairs, played a large role in forming the town. They started a large farm, raising livestock and growing citrus and donated land for a new community school and a church. Numerous streets were named after family members because of their contributions to the town.
Before the railroad arrived in the area in 1890, residents struggled to get to nearby cities to buy and sell goods. In addition to providing an excellent way for locals to get their products to market, the railroad also drew in new local businesses, hoping to take advantage of increased traffic in the community.
The town continued to expand, and the population grew as new businesses and transportation options became more prevalent. Brandon has grown to become an important part of the Tampa Bay area. With more than 103,000 residents, the city continues to be one of the more popular places to live near Tampa.

Its Brandon campus offers students several options for associate degrees, including programs focused in engineering technology, aquaculture, biology and computer science. Those looking to attend a top research institution can apply to the nearby University of South Florida. The college was founded in 1956, yet it has managed to become a highly respected and diverse university in the area.
Many residents find employment throughout Hillsborough County. The largest employer in the area is the Hillsborough County School Board.
