Before the railroad arrived in the area in 1890, residents struggled to get to nearby cities to buy and sell goods. Its Brandon campus offers students several options for associate degrees, including programs focused in engineering technology, aquaculture, biology and computer science. The college is known for its athletics, and many students get involved with the baseball, basketball, softball and volleyball teams. Those looking to attend a top research institution can apply to the nearby University of South Florida. The college was founded in 1956, yet it has managed to become a highly respected and diverse university in the area.

Many residents find employment throughout Hillsborough County. The largest employer in the area is the Hillsborough County School Board. Plenty of other residents find jobs with MacDill Air Force Base, Hillsborough County Government, Tampa International Airport, Verizon and the University of South Florida.

The median gross monthly rent in the city is $971, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Using public transportation may help residents cut down on monthly expenses. The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, known locally as HART, serves as a convenient transportation option for community residents.

Many residents like to take advantage of Brandon's close proximity to a large Westfield shopping center. With an enormous amount of stores, restaurants and entertainment options to choose from, visitors can spend a day shopping and enjoying lunch at the center.

Because Brandon is just a few miles from Tampa, it's easy to get away for a day. With its urban excitement and beautiful natural setting, Tampa offers something for everyone. Relax at one of the local beaches, enjoy a swim in the ocean or set out for a picnic on the sand. Animal lovers will enjoy a visit to the Lowry Park Zoo or the Florida Aquarium to see animals in their natural habitats. Those who enjoy the arts can wander the Tampa Museum of Art and check out the public art displays scattered throughout the city.
