Living in Destin, FL
Some of Destin's earliest inhabitants were Spanish explorers seeking the riches of the West in the 16th century; however, people have been attracted to the beauty and natural resources of the Florida panhandle for many centuries. The city got its name and start from a Connecticut-born fisherman named Captain Leonard Destin, who came to the area because of its abundant fishing waters. The area remained a small fishing village until the 1980s when Destin saw a resurgence as an ideal tourist location and started to grow residentially and commercially.Today, Destin has seen a recent spike in population and is home to nearly 12,500 residents, according to 2011 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Destin Attractions and Special Events
With nearly a quarter-mile of oceanfront views, Destin's Harbor Boardwalk is one of the major attractions in the area and the future home of the Captain Royal Heritage Park. Every year, this location features many popular community events, including the Destin Fishing Rodeo and the Destin Seafood Festival.
However, the city's main attraction is, of course, its beaches. This beautiful seaside city is home to 12 public beaches, providing residents plenty of water recreation, most of which is free of charge.
