Until recently, Lady Lake was largely an agricultural area pioneering in the country's citrus fruit farming industry. Although lumber and turpentine also developed part of the economy in Central Florida, the areas around Lake County became well known for their excellent watermelons, peaches, tomatoes and oranges. Today, Lady Lake is exhibiting a diverse business community that is eager to grow even more in the 21st century.

The majority of the students in the area frequent Lake-Sumter Community College. Known for its beautiful campus and diverse student body, this college offers 2-year degrees and certifications in a variety of fields. According to the city's comprehensive annual financial report, the largest employers in the area include Publix Supermarkets, The Home Depot and the Town of Lady Lake. Based on the report's findings, the largest industry in the area is retail.
