Living in Lady Lake, FL
There are more than 1,000 archaeological sites in the Lake County area recognized by the state of Florida, so people have been wanting to call Lady Lake home for many years. Some of the oldest settlers were French Huguenots; however, their colony was wiped out when the Spanish arrived in the mid-16th century. The community remained occupied by Seminole Native Americans and Spanish missionaries until a British botanist named William Bertram came into the area to study the unique horticulture native to Lady Lake and recorded the first identification of the royal palm tree in 1774.
Several towns came and vanished in Lake County between the Revolutionary and Civil Wars because the town switched from British to Spanish rule numerous times, resulting in many settlers relocating elsewhere in the state. However, the Homestead Act that was signed into law after the Civil War gave many Confederate and Union soldiers alike an opportunity for a fresh start in Florida, and many relocated into the Lady Lake area.
Until recently, Lady Lake was largely an agricultural area pioneering in the country's citrus fruit farming industry. Although lumber and turpentine also developed part of the economy in Central Florida, the areas around Lake County became well known for their excellent watermelons, peaches, tomatoes and oranges. Today, Lady Lake is exhibiting a diverse business community that is eager to grow even more in the 21st century.
