Living in Lake Worth, FL

Lake Worth became popular with settlers after a rail line expanded south of West Palm Beach, making the area much more accessible. The land was owned by two former slaves, and they referred to the settlement as Jewel. When they sold their property to Palm Beach Farms Company in 1911 the name was changed to Lucerne.

The area was officially incorporated as Lake Worth in 1912, and the small town began to grow. New amenities such as a dock, restaurants, alleys and municipal buildings were constructed, and short films of the new city were shown across the United States to encourage more settlers to move into the city.

Lake Worth saw huge growth throughout the 1920s, and installed stoplights, new bridges and other modern features. A golf course, hotels and other businesses were built by residents, who benefitted from the growth and economic development the city was experiencing.

Lake Worth residents will find that although the city now boasts more modern services and facilities, the historic charm of the area has not changed. Citizens have fiercely protected their city's long past, and have refused to let modern development projects diminish the architectural beauty of the city's old buildings.

Lake Worth is now home to more than 35,000 residents. With a range of diverse backgrounds and many heritages represented in the city, Lake Worth is a culturally rich city that appreciates and preserves the history of its residents.
