Living in Lauderhill, FL
In the early years of Lauderhill, its residents referred to it as Sunnydale. When houses first began popping up in the area, many were wary of moving to the dairy farm country that had many more cows than humans. In the city’s early years, thousands of acres of land were dedicated to grazing cows that produced fresh milk for the region. Until recently, the evidence of the McArthur Dairy Farm was still apparent.
The area was a planned urban development, and in the late 1970s, the northwest section was developed as a single-family home community. The area was planned specifically before any buildings were built, each designed for a purpose. Lauderhill has also been on the forefront of commercial development as one of the first enclosed air-conditioned malls in the Southeast opened in 1966 next to the Dairy Farm. Lauderhill Mall was once the spot where people would trap alligators and other animals.
