Overview of Miami Beach

Miami Beach is the coastal resort city in Miami-Dade County, Fla.. The city was revitalized during the 1980s and 1990s as a multibillion-dollar mecca for travel, business and residency. Miami Beach includes more than 7 miles of beaches, 20 parks, three golf courses and plenty of entertainment options. The island spans 7.1 square miles and acts as a natural jetty that separates Biscayne Bay from the Atlantic Ocean.

Living in Miami Beach, FL

More than 100,000 years ago, the Tequesta Indians were the first inhabitants in South Florida until the Spanish came to the region in the 16th century. By the early 19th century, immigrants from the Bahamas came to South Florida in search of a fleet of ships that crashed onto the Great Florida Reef. Around the same time, the Seminoles arrived and caused the area to break out into a war zone between 1836 and 1857 until the war ended and many Indians moved to regions near the Everglades.

In 1891, a widow from Cleveland named Julia Tuttle purchased 640 acres of land on the north bank of the Miami River, giving her the name of the “mother of Miami.” Within five years, she convinced Standard Oil to extend the railroad to Miami, a luxury hotel was built and the city of Miami was incorporated.

Many people moved to Miami Beach during the Great Depression and World War II. By the 1950s, the population had nearly doubled, which continued through the ‘60s as many people fled from Cuba after Fidel Castro took over. Population increases continued until the 1980s until Miami was considered the “Capital of the Americas.”
