Many people moved to Miami Beach during the Great Depression and World War II. By the 1950s, the population had nearly doubled, which continued through the ‘60s as many people fled from Cuba after Fidel Castro took over. Population increases continued until the 1980s until Miami was considered the “Capital of the Americas.”
