Living in North Miami Beach, FL

Captain William H. Fulford first explored Big Snake River in 1881 and was attracted to the lowlands, marshes and mangroves that dotted the landscape. When the Florida East Coast Railway was extended from West Palm Beach to Miami in 1896, depots and small towns popped up along the route. New settlers grew peas, beans, sugar cane and tomatoes east of the Oleta River. Rock mining became a large contributor to the economy when locals discovered rock that was ideal for building roads. In 1912, Lafe Allen designed plans for the “perfect city,” then named Fulford, allowing the city to flourish during the Florida land boom a few years later.

Fulford was re-named North Miami Beach in 1931 when the state legislature authorized a new charter for the city, creating the boundaries that still exist today. The change was part of a marketing effort capitalizing on Miami Beach’s growing fame throughout the United States. North Miami Beach thrived as a separate entity throughout the 20th century with impressive growth and development. Local authorities placed an emphasis on expanding parks and intensifying local beautification initiatives, allowing North Miami Beach to become the beautiful community it is today.
