Oakland Park was originally chartered in 1926 as a small village known as Floranada. Oakland Park Attractions and Special Events

Every year the city hosts the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Festival that honors the historic significance of this African-American historian and journalist that was instrumental to civil rights in Jaco Pastorius Park. Another popular community event is Oakland Park's Oktoberfest held in the fall, the largest in the Fort Lauderdale area.
