Overview of Orange City
Affordable, centrally located and full of small-town charm, Orange City is one of Florida's finest and fastest-growing communities. Many residents in the Sunshine State are excited about Orange City apartments for rent because of the great schools and excellent quality of life that people enjoy here. The city is located along Interstate 4, making it a popular spot for commuters working in the area or the neighboring community of Daytona Beach. Just minutes from numerous state parks and gorgeous Atlantic Coast beaches, Orange City has all of the perks of big city living close by but still maintains the tight-knit atmosphere that small-town residents love.
Living in Orange City, FL
Known as the Heart of Southwest Volusia, many people over the years have made Orange City the great small town that it is today. The first inhabitants in the area were Timucua Native Americans, and European immigrants didn't begin settling into the area until 1820. Over the years, the area came to be known as Orange City in 1882 due to the thousands of acres of orange groves that were planted and harvested. Today, the city has it's own historic district that is on the National Register of Historic Places to remind residents of its great past. Today, this bedroom community is home to more than 10,500 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, and the word is out about how great it is to live here, since the city has seen a whopping 60 percent increase in population from 2000 to 2010, according to City-Data.
Orange City Attractions and Special Events
One of the area's most prized attractions is Lower Wekiva Preserve State Park, part of the Seminole State Forest. Because of Florida's subtropical climate, there is an abundance of unique wildlife to explore, including alligators, cranes, storks and river otters along the winding Wekiva River. The park offers scenic hiking trails, canoeing and horseback riding for visitors and residents along a beautiful four-mile stretch of forest.
