Living in Oviedo, FL
Settlers came to the area near Lake Jesup looking to start over after the Civil War. They found that the area was well-suited to growing crops such as celery and citrus fruits. Nearby Orlando was easily accessible by boat or wagon for farmers who wanted to sell their crops to a larger market. This small farming community consisted of a wide variety of people, including settlers, former slaves and European immigrants.
The first postmaster chose to name the town Oviedo in 1879 to celebrate Florida's unique history with Spain. The original city of Oviedo is located in Northern Spain, and the two cities formed a sister city relationship to honor the link that exists between them.
Modern-day Oviedo is almost unrecognizable compared to the small farming town of the 1800s. The current population has soared to 33,528, according to July 2011 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Even though the city has changed over the years, it has not lost its appeal. Oviedo was named one of the Top 10 Best Towns for Families in the August 2011 issue of Family Circle, and made CNN Money's list of Best Places to Live in 2009.

There is also the option to attend the University of Central Florida, located just a few miles away in Orlando. With an array of academic programs to choose from, millions of dollars available in yearly research funding and a vast library, the college draws many residents from around the area.
A large percentage of Oviedo residents are employed by the Seminole County School System, the K-12 district that serves the area. Other significant employers in the community include Publix Super Markets, the City of Oviedo, A Duda & Sons, the First Baptist Church and Winn Dixie Stores.
