Living in Palm Bay, FL
The first residents of Palm Bay were the Ais, a tribe of Timucuan Indians, who settled along the Indian River Lagoon and along the banks of Turkey Creek. After living for thousands of years among the abundant wildlife and fishing resources, the Ais began to die off shortly after Spanish explorers came to the area. By 1845, Florida was annexed by the United States, and around the same time, more settlers began to flock to Brevard County. Five years later, the census recorded 139 people living in the area, which grew over time as citrus groves grew plentiful.
Originally named Tillman, residents decided that the name didn’t accurately depict the way of life in the area. In 1925, it was renamed Palm Bay, inspired by the palm trees that lined the bay of Turkey Creek. More people came to the area, and Palm Bay experienced a dramatic spike in population following World War II and after the founding of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Over the next few decades, Palm Bay began to blossom into an expansive community with new buildings, schools and businesses. Today, Palm Bay is the 19th largest city in Florida but still retains the small-town charm of the past.
