Overview of Palm Bay

Palm Bay is tucked away in an ideal location on Florida’s east central coast, just between Jacksonville and Miami in Brevard County. Situated between two exits on Interstate 95 and in close proximity to Melbourne and Orlando international airports and Port Canaveral, residents of Palm Bay never have issues getting around. Similarly, attractions are all around, as the Kennedy Space Center is only 50 miles away to the north and Disney World is 65 miles away to the west. However, residents don’t need to leave the expansive city limits for recreation. Spanning 98 square miles, Palm Bay is home to 29 city parks that include paintball and skateboarding parks, two golf courses, nearby beaches and a 200-acre regional park.

Palm Bay apartments for rent are great for anyone raising a family, retiring or just looking for a home in a great community near the beach. The city has continually grown over the past two decades, according to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau. Today more than 103,200 people call Palm Bay home.

Living in Palm Bay, FL

The first residents of Palm Bay were the Ais, a tribe of Timucuan Indians, who settled along the Indian River Lagoon and along the banks of Turkey Creek. After living for thousands of years among the abundant wildlife and fishing resources, the Ais began to die off shortly after Spanish explorers came to the area. By 1845, Florida was annexed by the United States, and around the same time, more settlers began to flock to Brevard County. Five years later, the census recorded 139 people living in the area, which grew over time as citrus groves grew plentiful.

Originally named Tillman, residents decided that the name didn’t accurately depict the way of life in the area. In 1925, it was renamed Palm Bay, inspired by the palm trees that lined the bay of Turkey Creek. More people came to the area, and Palm Bay experienced a dramatic spike in population following World War II and after the founding of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Over the next few decades, Palm Bay began to blossom into an expansive community with new buildings, schools and businesses. Today, Palm Bay is the 19th largest city in Florida but still retains the small-town charm of the past.
