Overview of Panama City
Hugging the Gulf of Mexico on the panhandle of beautiful northwestern Florida, Panama City is already known as an ideal tourist attraction, but it is also one of the fastest-growing communities in the Sunshine State. With its ideal climate, attractive small town atmosphere and plenty of outdoor activities due to its beachfront lifestyle, it makes sense that Panama City apartments for rent have become a hot commodity. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2011 estimated population was more than 36,600 with more than 20 percent under the age of 18, making Panama City the perfect place to raise a family.
Living in Panama City, FL
Incorporated in 1909, the community of Panama City was first founded by three homesteads in the late 1800s by wealthy Chicago residents and was first named Harrison after our ninth president. Before the installation of the railroad, the areas around Panama City depended on shipping and sailing on the water for the majority of their population influx and shipping goods. After establishing a fire department, many people began flocking to the area for the sugar sand beaches and crystal blue ocean water that has made Panama City famous.
The main industries in the area were fishing and lumbering due to the close proximity to the Gulf and nearby forests, and not much has changed since. The paper mill, farming, ship building, and lumbering all remain essential trades to the community to this day.
Panama City Attractions and Special Events
With 27 miles of sparkling white sand and glittering ocean water, Panama City's beaches are undoubtedly the popular attraction for visitors and residents. With loads of water sports activities like surfing, jetskiing and sailing year round, there is certainly no reason to be bored when you are a local. With events all year, including the Seabreeze Jazz Festival, Thunder Beach and the New Year's Eve Beach Ball Drop at Pier Park, this is not only a fun atmosphere, but a great place to get to know the members of your community.
