Living in Port St. Lucie

Port St. Lucie was first settled by the Spanish. In the late 1500s, they began building a fort in the area around the date of December 13th, which is the feast day of the Roman Catholic Saint Lucy. Old Spanish maps designate the area as Santa Lucia. The use of the anglicized version of the name, St. Lucie, began in the 1900s. From its early days as a military fort, the area became a port for the trade of citrus fruit and cattle, aided by the building of the Florida East Coast Railway. By the 1950s, a large ranch owned by the McCarty family began to attract a number of new residents.

As the area prospered, new developments began to spring up with new homes, condominiums and apartments to rent. With a beautiful climate and variety of activities for its residents, Port St. Lucie has become one of the fastest-growing areas of the state. The Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Area boasts a population of almost half a million, and the demographics range from young families with children and single adults to older retirees.
