Overview of Rockledge

Situated along the shoreline of the Indian River, Rockledge, Fla., is the oldest incorporated municipality in Brevard County. The town of Rockledge was officially established in 1887 after Major Cephas Bailey Magruder and his wife moved to the area after the conclusion of the Civil War. After people started to move down there during the cold winters up North for the season, Rockledge became known as the area's prime winter resort town. Thousands of people would travel via the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway through the Indian River to stay in Rockledge for the winters.

Individuals living in Rockledge provided the visitors with citrus fruits throughout their stay, which helped the economy. To continue the trend, there were several large hotels built during the 19th and early 20th centuries to accommodate tourists, also known to Florida residents as "snowbirds," who travel to the city during the colder months.

Rockledge Attractions and Special Events

There are a number of community-based events and points of interest that residents of Rockledge can attend. There are 17 one-of-a-kind public parks established throughout the town, as well as a variety of unique museums and dining spots for residents to enjoy. Rockledge has eight schools and 24 churches, several championship golf courses and excellent shopping. Environmental enthusiasts will love the outdoor activities on the neighboring beaches, such as salt and freshwater fishing, boating and sailing.
