Overview of Stuart

Located on Florida’s east coast, Stuart is the only incorporated city of Martin County. Coined as the Sailfish Capital of the world, residents and visitors alike set out to enjoy offshore deep sea fishing to capture the fastest fish in the ocean. Casual fishers can enjoy casting a line out from the downtown pier after strolling through the historic downtown center.

Stuart apartments for rent are near more than 50 locally owned shops, restaurants, shops and entertainment downtown. The area wasn’t always vibrant, but after the community put extensive research and effort into revitalization, it turned into a scenic getaway. The breathtaking scenery of the beachfront and unique boutiques can make any day enjoyable. Residents can regularly enjoy a night out on the town or a sunset cruise on a vintage Nantucket schooner. The abundance of attractions downtown and stunning landscape attracts many people to the region. According to City-Data, more than 15,800 residents call Stuart home.

Living in Stuart, FL

In the late 1800s, the countless creeks, Atlantic Ocean, the Indian River, and north and south forks of the St. Lucie River played a key role in the city’s development because many settlers depended on the water supply. By the 1880s, Homer Hine Stuart Jr. purchased a large piece of land and donated some for a depot. In return, his last name was used for the railroad that was built in the area. At the time, there were no other means to get to the area, because the community lacked a bridge over the St. Lucie River.

When the Florida East Coast Railway was built, settlers were able to transport fish and pineapples. This caused the tourism industry to boom. Many of the visitors to the city were outdoorsmen who came to hunt and fish. Fishing has always been a motivation for people to come to Stuart, and by 1914 Stuart was incorporated.
